DMHS staff, clients and friends of the agency gathered at Smith House on Monday, June 1st to celebrate the re-opening of DMHS’ Whitby Day Program. The program had been closed temporarily in order to undertake extensive renovations of the facilities.

This was a major renovation project – the kitchen was expanded, the main area sitting area was opened up, the washroom was completely redone, new floors were installed, new furniture was purchased, and the house was repainted, among other changes.

Those in attendance were delighted by the outcome, commenting especially on the comfort and brightness of their new space.

“We had an amazing turnout,” says Krista Bull, DMHS Program Coordinator. “Clients are excited to see the new renovations and are looking forward to enjoying their new space. The renovations coincided with an expansion of DMHS’ Peer Support program that now allows us to have two peer support workers directly supporting the Whitby Day Program.”

Day program members were especially pleased by the results. “We love the new renovations,” says Ralph. “It’s bigger, it’s brighter, there’s more room for activities and for cooking. Thanks to Durham Mental Health Services for making this possible.”

Dan, another Day Program member, says “It’s a nice open concept that creates a lot of space. It’s very comfortable. I also love the extra stove that was installed and all the new appliances. Even the bathrooms are cleaner and brighter.”

DMHS Executive Director Rob Adams acknowledged the Central East Local Health Integration Network (CE LHIN) for their commitment to embed peer support services in the larger mental health system. “Peer support works,” says Mr. Adams, “and we are delighted to have this great new renovated space as a site where peer support specialists and clients can connect. Thanks to the CE LHIN for making that happen.”
