DMHS’ BBQ Cart begins its 2017 operations with a Grand Opening at Salvation Army Thrift Store (311 Brock Street North, Whitby, rear entrance) on Tuesday, May 30 from 11:00am to 3:00pm. “We’re excited about our Grand Opening,” says BBQ Cart Operator and DMHS New Winds Day Program member Damon. “We’ll be open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays all summer long at that same location from 11:00am to 3:00pm each day. We are selling hot dogs, jumbos, sausages, beverages and chips.” He adds that on Wednesday’s they offer a combo special, adding chips and a cold drink to a hot dog, jumbo or sausage order for just $1.50. “Our BBQ cart is a great way for thrift shop customers and for anyone to come by and enjoy a quick and affordable meal as they shop.”
The BBQ Cart is operated entirely by members of DMHS’ New Winds Day Program. Day Program Peer Support Specialist Lynn explains, “It’s been an entire process for us. Member-facilitated groups provided business education, resumé-coaching, and conducted interviews for each BBQ cart staff role. All the roles are filled by enthusiastic New Winds members who look forward to serving the public.”
Day Program Peer Specialist Tanya add, “New Winds Members are committed to fighting stigma and stand for fairness, equality and inclusion. We’re not just operating a BBQ cart, to the same standards that would be expected in any business operation, but also our experienced staff will show you that people with mental health issues can lead successful, productive lives, which includes embracing employment opportunities.”
Come out and join the fun as we kick off another successful season in 2017!
